Do you ever have a feeling that marketers have a little too much information about you? One magic way to get me excited about something is to link J Dilla music to it!
For 3 long years, I have missed The Boondocks TV show soooooo much. I actually fell in love with The Boondocks comic strip and then the obsession rolled into the show. Strips like this reeled me in:
Aaron McGruder has such an awesome perspective on popular culture, politics, interpersonal relations, and basically everything else I've ever heard him speak on, that he is probably at the top of the list of people I'd love to have over for a small dinner gathering. He's just that cool.
Unlike many others, I totally understood McGruder's desire to walk away from the show and do something else. Sometimes it's just time for change and no one else really understands but you. I sensed the lack of passion in the 3rd season for sure.
The Boondocks is returning to Adult Swim today (4/21) but without McGruder as creative director. Talk about a killjoy! I'll watch, but just to stay culturally conversant. I had no appreciable excitement for the premier though, that is unil I saw the latest promo. No the promo wasn't that cool, but it is jazzed up with a dope track from the incomparable J Dilla. That's enough to get tonight's The Boondocks premier to register on my excitement radar.
Here is one place to check out old The Boondocks comic strips every day.
And a last little bit for you to savor. Can't wait to see what Aaron has cooking with his new show Black Jesus.
**UPDATE** I watched the episode and, as predicted, it was pretty lackluster. It looks like the animation is a bit off and the humor was missing that je ne said quoi. Bummer!
